Difficulty in accessing benefits and delays in payments have often left disabled people financially insecure. Welfareĭisabled people have, for a long time, had poor experiences using the welfare system. The narrow focus on medical vulnerability, coupled with the extremely rapid increase in demand for supermarket delivery slots and social distancing measures, means many disabled people are struggling to get hold of food and essentials. The policy response has added to this anxiety, with disabled people continuing to be grouped together and referred to as ‘vulnerable’, while there has been little clarity on what measures will be put in place to support disabled people while a longer term solution to the coronavirus crisis is sought. The outbreak and the issues it has raised in relation to money, essentials and rights has left many disabled people in a state of heightened anxiety, with concerns about contracting the virus, uncertainty about their future and prolonged isolation from friends and family.
